More and more products contain components based on artificial intelligence. The spectrum ranges from product and music recommendations for online services, through traffic sign and obstacle recognition in road traffic, to support for radiologists in cancer diagnostics.

In the current decade, machine learning has seen an unprecedented technological advance. In the process, this technology has penetrated numerous very different areas. Especially where digital technologies have been developed particularly strongly, such as in speech and image recognition, machine learning has become indispensable. The impressive results at the beginning of this decade and the associated development of deep learning were the impetus for a development that has already produced many fascinating results. It turns out that this technology offers solution approaches, especially for very complex problems, that are far superior to the classic methods.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, the digital revolution has led companies to operate a real digitalization. This paradigm shift has made the profession of web developer one of the most sought after in the job market.

However, quite paradoxically, it is also considered to be an activity seriously threatened by the rise of artificial intelligence on the assumption that many aspects of coding can be automated.

Already at the heart of our daily lives, artificial intelligence occupies an ever-greater place. If it is only in its infancy, its applications are indeed very numerous in the industrial sector, the banking sector, marketing, IT development, etc.

The quest for rationalization of companies leads them to a permanent search for efficiency and economy of the means implemented, in particular of time, in all development projects. Whether it is video games, support, or web design, we can therefore expect that the expansion of machine learning and  artificial intelligence will bring about a profound transformation in the profession of the web developer.

Artificial intelligence as an opportunity

Today more and more startups are investing in the realization of development bots so that a certain concern is worrying the professionals of the sector about the future of their profession. Regarding the digital sphere, there are already many tools aimed at creating or maintaining websites through artificial intelligence, and these are constantly being improved.

However, it could be that this metamorphosis gives rise, not to a "competitive" relationship between man and machine, but on the contrary, to a true complementarity: freed from the weight of repetitive and automatable tasks, the developer could fully devote himself to the creation of added value within its projects.

In general, the human side remains essential and above all irreplaceable to meet specific expectations or simply show inventiveness. The big obstacle that artificial intelligence faces are therefore that of needs and ideas. Therefore, it would appear more like a subsidiary tool helping to achieve certain tasks rather than a real threat to the profession of the developer.

The inevitable upheaval of the web domain

Thanks to its logical self-learning system, artificial intelligence acquires a predictive capacity that could prove to be revolutionary for many sectors – medicine, finance, law, logistics, or even marketing.

But this innovation has repercussions in the IT sector first and foremost. By supporting some of the technical tasks of coding, one can wonder if it will not ultimately take away from the profession of web developer some of its legitimacy.

Whether it is a news site or a sales site, artificial intelligence can take on the role of a real advisor to increase traffic. It is already proving its worth in web marketing via advertising targeting, but also in assistance with chat-bots or voice search linked to connected objects.

It is also possible to generate complete websites and improve the quality of content through the automated analysis of millions of data. But it should be borne in mind that most of the time these tools operate with human assistance, and are, on the whole, not very autonomous. 

Those, who fear being defeated by the AI, should remember that artificial intelligence is nothing other than the project it serves, under the conditions defined by those who programmed it, based on data provided to it.

It is the man who constitutes the essence of the machine since it is he who determines its existence.

Thus, the challenge posed by the innovations of our time consists for the moment in the use of new tools to which training and professional practices should be adapted to optimize their contributions.

The international competitive pressure of the markets alone will force the widespread use of machine learning processes within automation. In many areas, electromechanical hardware components have reached their physical limit, so that noteworthy optimization and improvement potential can basically only be found at higher levels. Many processes that are already individually complex to be modeled converge there. Machine learning will find widespread use in these areas and companies that do not exploit this potential will lose a lot of their competitiveness. In domains such as computer vision, machine learning methods have already become indispensable. That is why we are very optimistic about the future of ML and AI in web engineering.
